This is one of the best on base housings I have stayed at. The staff at the front desk was very kind and helpful upon checking in, and had helped out with the few maintainace issues I had.
while there are not enough hours in the day to make a comprehensive list, we'll start with the top few
The cleaning staff is also very friendly the few times I ran into them.
The taxpayers suffer when extra money is spent on downtown hotels when this broken office refuses to do their job. The Southern Pines policy not to help members of the 916th is a direct violation of DODI 1225.9 and more but there doesn't seem to be enough accountability there to ensure compliance. Joan Morton did the right thing and resigned, Gene and Kristine should do the same to get the organization on the right track.
-the manager Lynn is one of the most unpleasant humans I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with. She is not only completely unwilling to help or answer questions, her go-to tactic is to talk over you and repeat again and again that you joined the military. I'm actually aware of that fact, and that had nothing to do with my complaint about the room. but thanks for the reminder
Would definitely stay here again if given the opportunity
In closing: I will go out of my way to never stay here again. If I wanted to be treated as something less than human I would...well I really don't know. I can't imagine a situation where I'd want that. They also always seem to be "out" of comment cards, probably because they're tired of reading negative comments about how bad this place is.
-do you like dim lit hallways, poor room lighting, the smell of mold in your prison-style bathroom? Tiny fridges that can't fit the food you don't get to cook because you don't have a kitchen? Do you also love SHARING A BATHROOM WITH A STRANGER? if you answered yes to any of these, you'll love it here
cons:
At only $60 a night for a retired military guy like me, it made good economical sense to choose this place. The room was adequate for my wife and me, but dated and with an older, time-worn mattress, no working exhaust fan in the bathroom, and Wi-Fi that we reported as non-working. No elevator o the 2nd floor made it challenging for those of us with physical problems. Small fridge/freezer in room, comfortable easy chair and desk. Very gracious, informative, and helpful front desk staff--no complaints at all there--Honestly, we weren't even expecting they could take Space-A reservatoons, but they did, and despite the room shortcomings I still consider ourselves lucky to get on base for a weekend.
let's start with the pros:
Reserves not welcome here. If you call to make a reservation the first question they ask is "are you reserve?". If you say yes they refuse to speak to you any further and tell you to send your orders in to prove your need for lodging before they'll help you. I spent several days in a private hotel in Smithfield because they refused to help me. The first question they asked when i called was "what unit are you in?" When I told them I was in the 916th they told me they don't do business with the 916th and I had to stay in Smithfield indefinitely. It wasn't until I got the first sergeant involved until they reluctantly agreed to give me a reservation. The reserves should boycott the southern pines until they agree to do what they committed to in the host tenant agreement and treat the reserves the same as active duty.
For ~$60 I wasn't expecting much during my overnight stay here, but the room was very clean and offered a queen(?) bed, sofa chair, spacious closet, mini fridge and microwave. It felt similar to staying in a 3 star hotel! Definitely recommend, and will be staying here again next time I'm in Goldboro.
-Lynn is incredibly rude and difficult to deal with. She has NO interest in helping you and will make that very clear. She also takes great pleasure in reminding you of your status as one of the "untouchables caste" as a military member.
My only complaint is that the internet can be slow at times.
-the front desk staff, although trying to be helpful, told me repeatedly that I'd be able to move into a room where I didn't have to share a bathroom with a complete stranger. Apparently this is not the case at ALL, because as the manager lady reminded me several times, I joined the military. Thank you again manager lady. I had forgotten. However, I was given the run-around every single time i went in there with false promises of "next time...next week...on this date".
the cleaning staff is very kind and friendly. The night front desk staff is also kind and friendly. The hotel is also within walking distance of many things on base
